The Seattle Police Department has awarded Officer Albert Khandzhayan the prestigious Medal of Courage for his heroic actions during a domestic violence-related robbery and kidnapping incident in West Seattle last year.

The award, considered the department’s third-highest honor, recognizes exceptional bravery in the line of duty. Officer Khandzhayan was commended for his decisive response on May 3, 2025, when officers were called to a disturbing incident involving a woman whose ex-boyfriend allegedly broke her car window, assaulted her, and drove off with her vehicle while her three children were still inside.

While searching the area, Officer Khandzhayan located the stolen vehicle at a nearby gas station. As the suspect attempted to flee, he pursued the individual alone for over three minutes, even crossing a busy four-lane highway, while maintaining communication with fellow officers.

His actions led to the successful arrest of the suspect on multiple felony charges. The suspect was later booked into the King County Jail. Most importantly, the children were safely recovered and reunited with their mother.

According to Sergeant Joseph Macniac, Officer Khandzhayan demonstrated “immense bravery and courage,” acting swiftly in dangerous and unfamiliar conditions without hesitation. His efforts were credited with ensuring both the safety of the victims and the capture of a dangerous suspect.
