Renton Police Reactivate License Plate Reader Cameras After Policy Updates

USARenton Police Reactivate License Plate Reader Cameras After Policy Updates

The Renton Police Department has resumed operation of its Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras after a temporary pause to comply with updated state regulations.

Police Chief Jon Schuldt had previously halted the system on March 31 to ensure alignment with Washington’s new law, SB 6002. During the pause, the department reviewed and strengthened its policies, focusing on data governance, retention practices, and accountability standards. Officers and authorized users have also undergone training to meet the updated requirements.

According to the department, the ALPR system plays a key role in supporting investigations and improving outcomes for crime victims. Officials emphasized that the technology will now be used with stricter safeguards to ensure transparency, responsible use, and protection of community privacy.

The move reflects ongoing efforts to balance public safety needs with legal compliance and civil liberties.
