Kent Police Launch Blue Envelope Program to Improve Traffic Stops for Neurodivergent Drivers

USAKent Police Launch Blue Envelope Program to Improve Traffic Stops for Neurodivergent Drivers

KENT, Wash. — The Kent Police Department has announced the launch of the Washington State Blue Envelope Program, a voluntary initiative designed to make traffic stops safer and less stressful for neurodivergent drivers.

The program provides a free blue envelope that allows drivers to store important documents such as their driver’s license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance in one easily accessible location. The envelope also contains information for law enforcement officers about effective communication strategies when interacting with neurodivergent individuals.

According to Kent Police, the initiative aims to reduce misunderstandings and improve communication during traffic stops. Participants are not required to disclose a medical condition or provide proof of diagnosis to receive an envelope.

The program is intended to support individuals with autism, ADHD, developmental disabilities, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and other conditions that may affect communication during stressful situations.

Officials say the Blue Envelope Program promotes safer interactions between drivers and law enforcement while helping officers better understand the needs of community members.

The envelopes are available free of charge, and residents can obtain more information through the Washington State Department of Licensing and local law enforcement agencies.
