Germany’s conservative leader Friedrich Merz is set to lead the country after his party Christian Democratic Union secured the largest vote share in the country’s general election, defeating Olaf Scholz’s centre-left Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD).

According to German broadcaster ARD, the bloc led by Friedrich Merz, which includes his parties the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU), won 28.5 percent of the vote, followed by Germany’s far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD), which took 20.7 percent.
