IndiaBig blow to fugitive Lalit Modi, Vanuatu's Prime Minister orders cancellation of passport

Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi, who is dreaming of settling in the island country of Vanuatu situated in the Pacific Ocean, has been given a big shock by the government there. Vanuatu Prime Minister Jotham Napat has directed the Citizenship Commission to cancel the Vanuatu passport issued to Lalit Modi.

Recently, Lalit Modi had applied to surrender his Indian passport at the Indian High Commission in London. Lalit Modi left India in 2010 and settled in London. On Friday, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that the IPL founder has applied to give up his Indian citizenship.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had said, “Lalit Modi has applied to submit his passport to the Indian High Commission in London. It will be examined as per the existing rules and procedures. We have also been informed that he has acquired Vanuatu citizenship.

Vanuatu is a tax haven country, to get citizenship one has to invest Rs 1.3 crore. If both husband and wife take citizenship then a huge discount is given on the joint investment amount. This country is considered a safe haven for fugitives.
