The International Cricket Council (ICC), in collaboration with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Cricket Australia (CA) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), have announced financial support for Afghanistan women cricketers.
The three boards will provide financial support for Afghan women’s cricket, as well as “world-class coaching and facilities”, the ICC said during its board meeting in Zimbabwe on Sunday. A total of 21 women cricketers contracted by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) had left their country since the arrival of the Taliban in 2021. After which they regrouped for a cricket match in Australia this year, which brought them to everyone’s attention.
These women cricketers, who are banned from playing in Afghanistan, come to Canberra and Melbourne and play cricket. Firoza Amiri and Nahida Sapan are among the Afghan cricketers who took refuge in Australia. Sapan plays for the Carnegie Club, while Amiri represents Dandenong.
