USATrump Tariffs: Relief for India, out of America's tariff list, letter has been sent to 20 countries

India has not yet been included in the list of countries whose tariff letters were issued by the US President on Wednesday. India is negotiating a trade agreement with the US. This decision of the US regarding India will provide relief to Indian exporters. According to reports, the US has so far issued tariff letters to about 20 countries. US President Donald Trump sent tariff letters to six trading partners on Wednesday and promised to impose import duties on more countries late last night.

Earlier on April 2, the US had imposed an additional 26 per cent reciprocal tariff on Indian goods but had deferred it for 90 days till July 9. Now it has been deferred till August 1. However, the 10 per cent baseline tariff imposed by the US will remain in place. The United States is India’s largest trading partner as of 2021–22. During 2024-25, bilateral trade in goods stood at US$ 131.84 billion (exports of US$ 86.51 billion, imports of US$ 45.33 billion and trade surplus of US$ 41.18 billion).

The Trump administration on Monday sent the first batch of letters to 14 countries detailing tariffs the US will impose on products from those countries entering US markets from August 1, according to reports. Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, South Africa, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cambodia, Kazakhstan, Laos, Serbia and Tunisia are among the countries that have received letters signed by US President Donald Trump.

As of Wednesday, Libya, Iraq, Algeria (30 percent), Moldova, Brunei (25 percent) and the Philippines (20 percent) had received tariff letters. US President Donald Trump has recently threatened to raise tariffs on pharmaceutical imports by up to 200%. This threat has been given at a time when just a few months ago his Trump administration had launched a trade investigation in this sector. Indian manufacturers have a significant stake in this.
