Khalsa Gurmat Center: Nurturing Minds, Empowering Families, Building Community

USAKhalsa Gurmat Center: Nurturing Minds, Empowering Families, Building Community

Federal Way, WA – On August 31, 2025, the Northwest News team visited Khalsa Gurmat Center and witnessed the vibrant spirit of seva and learning firsthand. Children were immersed in lessons on music and art, exploring new instruments and coloring activities, while women from the community offered seva by preparing and serving food to all. These moments reflect the essence of the Center’s mission: to educate, empower, and engage. Since 2006, Khalsa Gurmat Center has been a cornerstone of education, civic participation, and cultural growth for Sikh and broader communities across Washington State. Founded as an independent, community-based nonprofit and formally incorporated in 2014, the Center continues to expand its outreach with programs that enrich young minds, strengthen families, and build bridges across diverse communities.

A Mission Rooted in Education and Growth

The heart of the Center’s mission is to provide children with a strong foundation in both academics and culture. Students participate in enrichment classes such as Sikh history, Gurmukhi, Sikh martial arts, music, arts, mathematics, and creative computing.
The Center also offers innovative programs in robotics and technology, sports, and Sikh youth summer camps, while encouraging projects on environmental sustainability and resource conservation. Career workshops bring leaders from medicine, law, healthcare, social justice, and engineering to inspire the next generation, and college readiness sessions guide students through financial aid and higher education opportunities.

Empowering Families and Communities

Beyond the classroom, Khalsa Gurmat Center actively works to empower families. Voter registration campaigns, caucus workshops, and Punjabi-language voter education materials ensure civic participation is accessible for all.
The Center hosts immigration clinics, elderly support programs, and community health fairs offering free flu shots, screenings, and consultations. These initiatives highlight a commitment not only to education but also to the health and well-being of the entire community.

Engaging with Broader Society

Khalsa Gurmat Center has positioned itself as a strong advocate for inclusivity and interfaith collaboration. The Center has hosted the White House’s AAPI Task Force Anti-Bullying Workshop, organized teacher trainings on Sikhism in partnership with the Wing Luke Asian Museum, and held forums on hate crimes alongside community and government leaders.
From interfaith dialogues to diversity events across King County, and cultural initiatives like Poetry on Buses in partnership with 4Culture, the Center fosters connections that strengthen bonds across communities.

A Legacy of Service

Since its founding, the dedicated team at Khalsa Gurmat Center has worked tirelessly to nurture children and strengthen families. Their belief is simple yet profound: when families, teachers, and administrators come together, children are empowered to lead inspired lives.
Nearly two decades later, the Center remains a beacon of hope, resilience, and unity for Seattle’s Sikh community and beyond.
