USACouncil President Satwinder Kaur Emphasizes Inclusive Leadership and Community-Centered Public Safety in Re-Election Bid

Council President Satwinder Kaur, a lifelong Kent resident and the first Indian-American Sikh woman elected to the Kent City Council, is seeking re-election to Position 2.

With an MBA in Technology Management from the University of Washington and over eight years of service on the council, Kaur has built a reputation for strengthening public safety, advancing equity, and securing state funding for local programs.

Speaking at the Kent Black Action Commission Candidate Forum, she reaffirmed that public safety remains her highest priority, emphasizing that it extends beyond hiring more officers to ensuring they have the right tools, training, and community trust.

She highlighted her work increasing diversity within Kent’s police force—now 43 percent composed of officers from BIPOC backgrounds—and her continued efforts to fund the Community Emerging Law Enforcement Program, which connects residents with police to improve collaboration.

Kaur also noted the importance of representation across all city departments, explaining that when staff “look like our community,” services become stronger and more responsive. Her message underscored a leadership style grounded in inclusivity, advocacy, and resource-driven safety—reflecting her commitment to a Kent where every resident feels seen, heard, and protected.
