USAK9 Gambit and Kent Police Assist WSP in Locating and Arresting Felon

Kent, WA — A coordinated effort between the Kent Police Department and the Washington State Patrol (WSP) led to the arrest of a fleeing felon early Saturday morning.

Around 3 a.m., Kent officers were notified that a WSP officer was in foot pursuit of a suspect who had fled from a traffic stop for reckless driving on 1st Avenue South. The suspect abandoned his vehicle and attempted to escape on foot, prompting Kent Police to set up a protective perimeter in collaboration with WSP.

K9 Gambit and his handler, Kent K9 Officer Flesher, were deployed to assist in the search. After loud warnings were issued with no response, Gambit was commanded to “seek.” The police dog quickly picked up the suspect’s scent and began tracking through a fenced backyard area. The suspect, attempting to hide in nearby bushes, was soon discovered by perimeter officers and surrendered without further incident.

Authorities confirmed that in addition to reckless driving and eluding, the suspect faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen vehicle, vehicle theft, and DUI.

Kent Police praised the teamwork between agencies, highlighting the role of K9 Gambit and Officer Flesher in bringing the situation to a safe conclusion.

“Gambit is a good boy, but it is not unusual that his presence often provokes suspects to unhide themselves,” the department stated.

The Kent Police Department extended thanks to WSP for their collaboration and credited the swift teamwork for preventing further danger in the community.
