KENT, WA — October 14, 2025: A tense situation unfolded Tuesday morning when a suspected explosive device was brought to the Kent Police Department by a private citizen. According to an official statement, the incident occurred around 10:58 a.m. after the citizen found a suspicious backpack near the river, placed it in their vehicle, and drove it to the police station.
Upon discovery of the backpack, Kent Police immediately evacuated the station and advised nearby residents and businesses to either shelter in place or evacuate, depending on their proximity. The Port of Seattle Bomb Squad responded swiftly to the scene and determined that the device was homemade and potentially active.
Using specialized training and equipment, the bomb squad successfully neutralized the device and conducted its disposal. Surrounding roads were temporarily closed during the operation for public safety.
In a statement, Kent Police expressed deep gratitude for the cooperation of the community and the swift response from the Port of Seattle Bomb Squad. “We are very thankful for the assistance and for the Kent community that cooperated with directives during this incident,” said Assistant Chief Jarod Kasner.
As a precaution, police conducted a full sweep of the City Hall Campus following the discovery. No additional devices were found, and authorities confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public. An investigation into the origins of the device is now underway.
Kent Police took the opportunity to remind the public never to handle or move suspected explosives. “It is extremely dangerous to move explosives and should only be done by highly trained professionals,” the statement emphasized.
Anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to contact the Kent Police Department.
