USARenton Police Chief Addresses Flock Camera Data Concerns Following UW Report

Renton, WA — October 24, 2025:
Renton Police Chief Jon Schuldt has issued a public statement following a University of Washington report that revealed some law enforcement agencies across the nation had used Flock camera systems for unauthorized searches, including immigration and ICE-related queries.

According to Chief Schuldt, while Renton was not specifically targeted, the city’s system was part of a broader network included in the nationwide data sweep. Upon learning of the issue, Schuldt said he immediately paused all external data sharing through Renton’s Flock system to prevent further access.

“Outside agencies must now submit specific, legitimate criminal law enforcement requests to access any data,” Schuldt said. He emphasized that there is no indication any Renton-specific data was misused, but called even the possibility of misuse “unacceptable.”

The department is now working with Flock Safety to implement stronger safeguards, ensuring that data access remains strictly limited to lawful use.

Chief Schuldt reaffirmed Renton PD’s commitment to balancing public safety and privacy, noting that while Flock cameras remain a valuable investigative tool, protecting residents’ data is a top priority.
