Kent Police and Valley SWAT Arrest Suspect in 2021 Kent Homicide Case

USAKent Police and Valley SWAT Arrest Suspect in 2021 Kent Homicide Case

The Kent Police Department has announced a major breakthrough in a long-running homicide investigation, confirming the arrest of a suspect connected to the 2021 murder of Austin Leming, age 36, who had been reported missing in December of that year.

In the early hours of November 17, 2025, detectives from Kent Police, supported by Valley SWAT, executed a warrant at a residence in Des Moines, Washington, where they arrested Brian Mares, a 46-year-old man identified as the primary suspect. The arrest came after SWAT surrounded the home and Hostage Negotiators contacted the individual inside.

Investigators had previously traced Austin’s last known movements from Puyallup to Kent, ultimately determining that he had spent time with Mares shortly before his disappearance. A search warrant for Mares’ residence revealed blood evidence and additional clues tying him to the case.

Kent detectives continued tracking leads over the past four years, interviewing associates and serving numerous search warrants in an effort to locate Austin and compile evidence. Their persistence ultimately led to probable cause for Mares’ arrest on Second-Degree Murder charges.

Kent Police Chief Rafael Padilla praised the dedication of the detectives, emphasizing their commitment to bringing justice to Austin’s family:

“This case is a perfect example of the dedication and commitment our detectives have to bring closure to the family of the victim, and justice to those who committed this heinous crime.”

Despite the arrest, Austin Leming’s remains have not yet been found, and the department continues to ask the public for assistance. Anyone with information regarding Austin’s whereabouts is urged to contact the Kent Police Tip Line at 253-856-5808 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

For urgent information, the department advises calling 911.
