Detectives Arrest Teen in Ballard Bridge Graffiti and Assault Case

USADetectives Arrest Teen in Ballard Bridge Graffiti and Assault Case

Seattle, WA — Seattle police detectives have arrested a 17-year-old boy in connection with a graffiti incident and the assault of an 80-year-old man near the Ballard Bridge earlier this week.

The incident occurred on November 17, when the victim noticed four teenagers spray-painting graffiti on an auto business in the 4900 block of 15th Avenue Northwest. The man pulled over and began recording the vandalism on his cellphone. As he filmed, two of the teens crossed the street and began tagging the side of the Ballard Bridge.

During the confrontation, one of the suspects attacked the 80-year-old man, punching him multiple times. The assault left the victim with a shoulder injury and a cut lip. A bystander attempted to intervene, prompting the teen and an accomplice to flee the scene.

The victim’s family later posted video of the attack and graffiti online to seek help identifying the suspects. A tip from the neighborhood app Nextdoor provided names, helping detectives move quickly.

Seattle Police Department’s Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) took over the case, identifying the suspects and collecting evidence, including five discarded spray-paint cans found near the bridge. Damage to the nearby auto business was estimated at $250, and the City of Seattle assessed $1,110 in repair costs for the bridge cleanup.

On November 20, CIU detectives located the 17-year-old suspect at a high school in Wallingford. With the cooperation of school administrators, officers arrested the teen without incident for investigation of assault and property destruction. The suspect, who has had previous law enforcement interactions, was processed at the North Precinct and his mother was notified.

Juvenile detention officials at the Judge Patricia H. Clark Children and Family Justice Center declined to book the teen, and he was released to a parent pending further investigation.

The case remains open and active.
