USAKing County Executive Girmay Zahilay Announces New Sound Transit Board Appointments

King County, WA — King County Executive Girmay Zahilay has announced his first slate of Sound Transit Board nominations since taking office, marking a significant step in shaping the future of regional transit in the Puget Sound area.

The newly appointed board members will serve during a critical period for the region’s transportation system, as Sound Transit prepares for the opening of the Federal Way Link Extension this weekend and the East Link Extension in 2026, along with other major transit expansions.

Zahilay said the goal of the appointments is to strengthen regional collaboration and ensure the delivery of reliable, safe, and equitable transit for daily riders. He emphasized the importance of strong leadership, relationship-building, and fiscal responsibility in guiding the agency’s next phase.

“I have nominated leaders who bring deep experience, strong partnerships, and a commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and equitable transit for the people who rely on it every day,” Zahilay said. “I am confident this group will serve our region well and help us fulfill our promises to riders and taxpayers on time and within budget.”

Appointees Include:

  • Katie Wilson, Mayor-Elect, City of Seattle

  • Teresa Mosqueda, King County Councilmember

  • Steffanie Fain, King County Councilmember

  • Pete von Reichbauer, King County Councilmember

  • Angela Birney, Mayor of Redmond

  • Thomas “Tom” McLeod, Mayor of Tukwila

The nominations are scheduled to be considered by the King County Council at its meeting on Tuesday, December 9.

Zahilay said the appointments represent a major step toward building a more connected, accessible, and future-ready transit system for the entire region.
