A 36-year-old man is in custody after allegedly stealing a vehicle early Friday morning and attempting to flee police by repeatedly ramming a patrol car, according to authorities.
Police were dispatched at approximately 8:15 a.m. to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the 2600 block of NE 4th Street. When officers arrived at the scene, the driver noticed the patrol car and immediately attempted to back away from officers. A second patrol unit quickly moved in, boxing in the suspect’s vehicle to prevent his escape.
Despite being blocked in, officers say the suspect tried to force his way out by crashing his vehicle multiple times into a police patrol car. The attempt was unsuccessful, and the driver remained trapped.
The suspect then refused to exit the vehicle, prompting officers to break a window and physically remove him from the car. During the arrest, the suspect told officers that he had ingested fentanyl.
Emergency medical personnel transported the suspect to a nearby hospital for evaluation before he was later booked into jail. He is facing multiple charges, including vehicle theft and driving under the influence (DUI).
The incident remains under investigation.
