Seattle, — The State Route 99 tunnel was closed in both northbound and southbound directions following fire-related activity inside the tunnel, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).
WSDOT Traffic announced the closure late Thursday night, citing assistance from the Seattle Fire Department. Electronic message boards at the tunnel entrances warned drivers with alerts reading “Tunnel Closed – Fire in Tunnel.”
Motorists were urged to seek alternate routes and use caution while emergency crews responded to the situation. No immediate details were released regarding the cause of the fire or whether any injuries were reported.
Traffic delays were reported in downtown Seattle as vehicles were diverted away from the tunnel. Authorities have not yet provided an estimated time for reopening.
Drivers are advised to monitor WSDOT Traffic updates for the latest information.
