The man convicted of attacking former Japanese Prime Minister Fomiyo Kishida has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. The Wakayama District Court announced the sentence on Wednesday. The attacker’s name is Ryuji Kimura (25), he has been convicted on 5 charges.

On April 15, 2023, a smoke bomb was thrown at Kishida during an election rally in Wakayama city. Kishida survived the attack, but two other people were injured. Kimura was arrested by the police on the spot. A knife was also recovered from his bag.

According to Japan Times, Kishida had come to deliver a speech at an election rally in Wakayama city. The blast occurred at 11:30 am local time on April 15. After this, at around 1 o’clock, Prime Minister Kishida completed his speech in Wakayama city. He said- We are present in the midst of election campaign. We should continue this.
