Renton Proclaims Women’s History Month, Honoring Leadership and Community Impact

USARenton Proclaims Women’s History Month, Honoring Leadership and Community Impact

The city of Renton has officially recognized March as Women’s History Month, celebrating the vital contributions of women in shaping history, culture, and community. During a recent city council meeting, Mayor Armondo Pavone issued a proclamation aligning with this year’s national theme, “Leading the Change: Shaping a Sustainable Future.”

The observance traces its roots back to 1980, when President Jimmy Carter first proclaimed National Women’s History Week. It later expanded in 1987 when Congress officially designated March as Women’s History Month, creating a nationwide platform to recognize women’s achievements.

This year’s theme, set by the National Women’s History Alliance, emphasizes financial sustainability, community resilience, leadership succession, and intergenerational equity—highlighting the ongoing role of women in driving meaningful societal progress.

The proclamation in Renton was accepted by representatives from YWCA Seattle | King | Snohomish, including Director of Health and Safety Arnell Wilkerson-King, Survivors FIRST Legal Advocate Angelique Rodriguez, and Sexual Assault Community Advocate Cameron Claytor.

Wilkerson-King spoke about the organization’s wide range of services, including housing assistance, legal advocacy, and support programs for survivors of domestic violence. She underscored the importance of these services, describing them as lifelines for those in need. “Healing begins when someone is believed, and change begins the moment we refuse to be silent,” she said.

YWCA Seattle | King | Snohomish has served communities since 1894, supporting women and families through a variety of social services. Its Renton location continues to provide essential resources to local residents.

The proclamation also highlighted the growing presence of women in leadership roles across Renton. Women currently serve as council president, administrators, judges, and nearly half of the city council. This progress reflects a long history of advancement, dating back to 1910 when Washington State became one of the first in the nation to grant women the right to vote.

As Renton celebrates Women’s History Month, the city recognizes both the achievements of past generations and the ongoing efforts of women working to build a more equitable and sustainable future.
