Alaska Airlines has announced a hike in checked baggage fees for flights across North America, citing rising fuel costs and an uncertain global economic environment. The updated pricing will apply to all tickets booked on or after April 10, 2026, and will impact both Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines operated flights.
Under the revised fee structure, passengers will pay $45 for the first checked bag, up from $40, and $55 for the second checked bag, previously $45. Fees for additional bags have also increased significantly, with third and subsequent checked bags now costing $200 instead of $150.
The airline has also removed the $5 prepayment discount that was previously available for customers who checked bags online or via mobile devices ahead of departure.
Despite the changes, several benefits remain intact. Members of the airline’s loyalty programs, including Atmos™ Rewards status holders and eligible cardholders, will continue to receive their existing baggage perks. Programs such as Huaka‘i for intra-Hawai‘i travel and Club 49 for Alaska residents remain unchanged, offering free baggage allowances under specific conditions.
Other policies, including oversized and overweight baggage fees, as well as allowances for first-class passengers and active-duty military personnel, will remain the same.
The airline emphasized that these adjustments are necessary to sustain operations amid fluctuating fuel prices and evolving global conditions.
