The Yakima Police Department has announced the closure of E. Yakima Avenue between 2nd Street and 3rd Street after a broken water main caused significant flooding in the area Friday afternoon.
City crews responded quickly, placing barricades and traffic control devices around the affected section as water poured across the roadway. Photos released by police show water pooling along the street and nighttime flooding stretching across lanes in the downtown corridor.
Officials say the repair timeframe is currently unknown, and drivers are urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes until further notice.
The City of Yakima is expected to provide updates as crews assess the extent of the damage and work to restore service and reopen the roadway.
