Washington, D.C.
Tensions in Washington have deepened as former President Donald Trump canceled a scheduled budget meeting with Democratic leaders, intensifying fears of a potential government shutdown.
According to Democratic leadership, Trump and GOP lawmakers are refusing to negotiate on healthcare-related concessions that Democrats argue are essential to meet the needs of Americans. They warn that without an agreement, the country could face a painful shutdown.
Democrats contend that by withholding their votes, they are protecting Americans from what they describe as “harmful budget policies.” They insist that if the government shuts down, responsibility lies entirely with Trump and the Republican Party.
In a social media post, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt accused Democrats of threatening a shutdown over demands for free healthcare for undocumented immigrants, framing the dispute as a refusal to compromise.
The standoff highlights the widening partisan divide as both parties hold firm in their positions, raising uncertainty about the budget’s future and the stability of government operations in the weeks ahead.
