The Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan will remain suspended until it completely ends its support and patronage of cross-border terrorism. Pakistan must not only end it, but its efforts must also be credible. Efforts should be so effective that there is no scope for this support-protection again. On April 24, the Union Jal Shakti Ministry informed the Cabinet Secretary about its move to suspend the Indus Water Treaty.
In the monthly report sent by the ministry to the Cabinet Secretary, Secretary Devshree Mukherjee has written that after the barbaric and Pakistan-sponsored terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, the Indus Water Treaty has been suspended with immediate effect. This treaty was signed in 1960 under the mediation of the World Bank.
After India’s tough stand, Pakistan has for the first time expressed its desire to renegotiate the treaty, but according to government sources, there will be no change in India’s stand. Meanwhile, India has started its work on all the six rivers covered under the Indus Water Treaty based on its own priorities after withdrawing from its treaty commitments.
