Detectives with the Seattle Police Department are asking for public assistance in solving the fatal shooting of two teenagers in South Seattle’s Rainier Beach area.
Authorities say the victims, both students at Rainier Beach High School, were shot on January 30 near a bus stop at Rainier Avenue South and South Henderson Street.
Victims Believed to Be Targeted
Investigators believe the two teens — Tyjon Stewart, 18, and Traveiah Houfmuse, 17 — were intentionally targeted when a gunman exited a bus operated by King County Metro and opened fire. The suspect then fled the scene on foot before officers arrived.
Police are urging passengers who were riding Route 106 at the time, as well as witnesses waiting at the bus stop, to come forward. Officials say dozens of students were present at the stop shortly after school dismissal, just before 4 p.m.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Officers provided emergency aid until crews from the Seattle Fire Department arrived and continued treatment. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The King County Medical Examiner has taken custody of the bodies and will officially confirm identities and determine causes of death.
Ongoing Search for Suspect
Following the shooting, officers and deputies searched surrounding areas of Seattle but have not located the suspect. Detectives and crime scene investigators continue to process evidence and review leads.
Police say the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation.
