A suspected DUI crash in Kent, Washington led to the arrest of a driver after a collision involving a mother and her toddler, according to the Kent Police Department.
The incident occurred shortly after 11:13 p.m. in the 26000 block of Pacific Highway South, where officers were dispatched following reports of a crash. Investigators say a 29-year-old woman driving a Lexus GS struck a Chevy Tahoe driven by a Spanaway resident.
Police said the Tahoe driver had been traveling southbound on Pacific Highway South and was attempting a left turn onto South 260th Street when the Lexus, traveling westbound on South 260th Street, made a right-hand turn and smashed into the Tahoe.
Inside the Tahoe were the driver and her two-year-old child, who was seated in a rear child seat behind the driver. Both were evaluated at the scene by medics and thankfully did not suffer serious injuries, though the force of the crash rendered both vehicles inoperable and they were towed from the scene.
Authorities said the driver of the Lexus admitted she had been drinking and showed signs of impairment. She was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) and transported to jail, where she was asked to take a breath test to determine her blood alcohol level.
Police emphasized that the outcome could have been far worse, especially with a young child in the vehicle. Officials are urging drivers to avoid drinking and driving and to plan ahead with a sober ride.
