Seattle, WA — Seattle police arrested a 48-year-old man with active felony warrants after he broke into a safe, stole a firearm, and attempted to flee officers.
On February 16, at approximately 1:50 p.m., patrol officers responded to a weapons-related call near East Denny Way and 20th Avenue. A caller reported seeing a man pry open a discarded safe in an alley and remove a handgun. The suspect was armed with a crowbar, a hammer, and the stolen gun when he quickly left the scene.
Officers soon located the suspect nearby. When commanded to stop, he ran, leading to a foot chase. During the pursuit, he discarded a backpack, which officers recovered and found contained the stolen handgun.
During the arrest, officers also seized marijuana and methamphetamine from the suspect. Investigators confirmed that the man is a convicted felon for a violent offense and was under Department of Corrections supervision with an active felony warrant for escape from community custody. He is legally prohibited from possessing firearms and controlled substances.
Further investigation revealed an additional $7,500 felony warrant for theft of a motor vehicle.
The suspect was booked into King County Jail on charges including obstructing a public officer, unlawful possession of a firearm, and his outstanding warrants.
The Gun Violence Reduction Unit detectives are handling the case.
