A helicopter flying for a sightseeing trip crashed into the Hudson River in New York on Thursday, killing a total of six people, including five members of a Spanish family. The dead include three children and the helicopter pilot. This tragic accident happened when the helicopter was flying near Manhattan.
The helicopter, a Bell 206 model, took off from the Skyport at about 3 p.m. and flew along the Manhattan shore to the George Washington Bridge. It then turned back but lost control and crashed into the water near Hoboken Pier in New Jersey.
According to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, NYPD and FDNY divers rescued all six people from the water. Four people died on the spot, while two others were taken to the hospital, where they died.
Many eyewitnesses of the accident said that the helicopter was seen spinning in the air and smoke was coming out of it. One person said that it seemed as if the rotor blade of the helicopter broke in the air, due to which it fell straight into the water.
