Iran’s government has released new death tolls in its war with Israel, saying at least 1,060 people have been killed. Saeed Ohadi, head of Iran’s Martyrs and Veterans Affairs Foundation, gave the death toll in an interview broadcast on Iranian state television late Monday.Ohadi said the death toll could reach 1,100 given that some people were seriously injured.
Iran has downplayed the effects of Israel’s 12 days of bombing during the war, saying the attacks devastated its air defence system. Since the ceasefire came into effect, Iran has been slowly acknowledging the extent of the destruction. However, Iran has not yet disclosed how much damage its military has suffered. The Washington-based human rights activist group said 1,190 people were killed, including 436 civilians and 435 members of the security forces. 4,475 people were also injured in the attacks.
According to Reuters, an Israeli military official said that Iranian airstrikes last month targeted some Israeli military sites. This is the first time it has been publicly confirmed that Israeli military sites were attacked. Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said very few sites have been affected and they are functional. The official declined to provide further details. He did not give details on which military locations were hit or the extent of damage to military infrastructure.
