The politics of these two major parties has mostly been based on centrists. At times, there is very little difference between the two parties on many important issues, especially regarding foreign affairs. Especially during the presidential elections, this process is very costly. That is why most of the small parties stay away from it. Since the 1970s, presidential campaigns (primaries and caucuses, national conventions, and the general election) have been publicly funded through the tax checkoff system Under which taxpayers can decide whether a portion of their federal tax ($3 for an individual and $6 for a married couple) should be allocated to the Presidential election campaign fund.
