The Kent Police Department has successfully carried out a major retail theft crackdown, resulting in multiple arrests and recovery of stolen goods during a coordinated shoplifting emphasis operation.
According to officials, the department’s Crime Reduction Unit (CRU), along with patrol officers and Safeway loss prevention teams, conducted the operation at a Safeway store. The effort led to the arrest and charging of eight suspects, who collectively face 17 criminal charges.
Police reported that the suspects, consisting of five males and three females ranging in age from 21 to 63, are from Kent, Tukwila, Renton, and Tacoma. Many were caught on surveillance cameras concealing merchandise and attempting to leave the store without payment.
In one notable case, a suspect attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by officers. Police later discovered he had been carrying at least 25 pounds of stolen goods hidden inside a specially modified jacket. The stolen items included everyday essentials such as peanut butter.
Authorities also noted that some suspects attempted to discard stolen items before being detained, but officers were able to recover evidence.
The department emphasized that such operations will continue, targeting retail theft across various locations, days, and times. Officials also warned that repeat offenders and organized shoplifters will face strict enforcement measures.
