The Kent Police Department has announced the promotion of former Sergeant L. Meyer to the rank of Commander, recognizing his years of dedicated service and leadership within the department.

During a recent ceremony, Kent Police Chief Padilla administered the oath of office, while Kent Councilmember Bill Boyce participated in welcoming Meyer into his new leadership role. Chief Padilla praised Meyer’s professionalism and commitment, describing him as an intelligent, innovative, and passionate leader who has consistently contributed to the department and the community.

Commander Meyer has served with the Kent Police Department for 16 years and has worked in a variety of assignments, including Patrol Officer, Property Crimes Detective, Special Assault Unit/Violent Crimes Detective, SAU/SVU Detective, Violent Crimes Detective, and Patrol Sergeant. He has also played important roles in domestic violence response programs and co-responder initiatives supporting community safety.

Police officials highlighted Meyer’s involvement in Project Be Free, a program focused on assisting domestic violence victims, as well as his leadership in strengthening officer development and public engagement efforts across Kent.

When asked about his favorite part of the job, Commander Meyer said he values the opportunity to positively impact the community and mentor officers to become leaders who make meaningful contributions to public service.

The Kent Police Department encouraged community members to congratulate Commander Meyer on his promotion and continued service.
