Kent Police Department Shares Winter Safety Tips for Drivers and Residents

USAKent Police Department Shares Winter Safety Tips for Drivers and Residents

KENT, Wash. – The Kent Police Department is reminding residents to prepare for winter weather by taking precautions at home, on the road, and throughout their neighborhoods.

Although snow has not yet arrived, the department warns that colder temperatures, rain, and icy conditions can create hazardous situations for drivers and homeowners.

Winter Driving Safety

Residents are encouraged to keep their gas tanks at least half full, replace worn windshield wiper blades, check tire tread and pressure, and ensure their vehicle’s lights, brakes, and fluids are in good condition.

Drivers should also keep an emergency kit in their vehicles containing warm clothing, blankets, water, snacks, a flashlight, and a phone charger.

Police advise motorists to slow down, increase following distances, and avoid driving in severe weather when possible. Residents are also reminded not to leave vehicles unattended while warming them up, as running vehicles can be targets for theft.

Home Winterization

The department recommends cleaning gutters, removing leaves from storm drains, insulating exposed pipes, checking smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and trimming tree branches that could fall during storms.

Residents should also ensure outdoor lighting and house numbers are visible and that walkways are adequately prepared for icy conditions.

Helping the Community

Kent Police encourages residents to check on neighbors who may need assistance preparing for winter, particularly older adults and those who may have difficulty managing cold-weather conditions.

The department’s message is simple: taking a few precautions now can help prevent emergencies and keep the community safe throughout the winter season.

Residents can follow Kent Police Department updates for additional seasonal safety information.
