KENT, WA — Kent Police officers are being praised for their quick, life-saving response after a suicidal man in his 40s severely injured himself during a 911 call over the weekend.
According to a statement shared by the Kent Police Department, a relative called 911 after the man, armed with a knife, threatened to end his life. The relative had to abruptly leave the call when the man used the weapon to inflict a serious wound to his own neck.
When officers arrived, they discovered the man with significant injuries and immediately began providing emergency medical aid to stop the bleeding. Despite the man struggling and resisting assistance, Officers Thompson, Bare, and Corner managed to control the situation and slow the bleeding until medics arrived.
The department reported that the man is expected to survive. A sergeant’s synopsis of the incident stated, “Undoubtedly the patient’s survival is credited to Officers Thompson, Bare, and Corner’s immediate aid.”
Kent Police emphasized that they intentionally released minimal details to protect the individual’s privacy but felt the incident demonstrated the importance of quick action and compassion during mental-health emergencies. The department also noted that the holiday season can intensify emotional challenges for many people.
They encouraged residents to share available crisis resources, stressing that help is accessible around the clock.
