A powerful burst of lake-effect snow is creating hazardous travel conditions across parts of the Midwest and Northeast this Thanksgiving Day, prompting weather warnings in several states.
According to meteorologists, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and western New York are all under active lake-effect snow alerts as bands of heavy snowfall continue to sweep through the region. These narrow yet intense snow bands are being fueled by cold air moving over the Great Lakes, producing rapid accumulations and sharply reduced visibility.
Residents in affected areas have reported slick roads, blowing snow, and whiteout conditions, making holiday travel especially dangerous. Forecasters warn that snowfall rates may reach several inches per hour in some zones, increasing the risk of accidents and delays on major highways and at regional airports.
Local authorities are urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel, use extreme caution, and monitor updates from the National Weather Service throughout the day.
Despite the treacherous conditions, road crews continue working to clear major routes, though officials caution that drifting snow and rapidly changing conditions may persist into the weekend.
