Renton, WA – A severe multi-vehicle collision caused by a dump truck losing control served as a sobering reminder of seatbelt safety, according to the Renton Police Department’s statement released on National Seat Belt Day.
The crash occurred on December 2, 2021, when a dump truck carrying heavy debris veered out of control while traveling northbound on 140th Way SE toward Maple Valley Highway. The out-of-control vehicle triggered a multi-car pileup involving eight vehicles.
Two of the cars were violently pushed across five lanes of Maple Valley Highway, through a jersey barrier and a cyclone fence, eventually coming to rest inside the Maplewood Golf Course. Photos released by the department show extensive damage, debris scattered across the scene, and emergency responders investigating the wreckage.
When Renton Police Traffic Investigators arrived, they discovered a remarkable outcome: despite the intensity of the crash, victims struck by the truck did not suffer life-threatening injuries. Officers credited this to one crucial factor — the victims were wearing their seatbelts.
The department emphasized the incident as a powerful example of how seatbelts can save lives, especially on National Seat Belt Day.
“Seatbelts save lives,” the department reiterated.
