Seattle police arrested a 37-year-old man Wednesday evening following a tense standoff in the Roosevelt neighborhood after reports of a weapon threat.
At approximately 7:18 p.m., officers responded to the 7800 block of Lake City Way Northeast after receiving calls about a man waving a handgun at pedestrians. Upon arrival, officers located a black BMW stopped in the roadway, which was later confirmed to be stolen. The suspect was seated in the passenger seat, visibly holding what appeared to be a firearm.
Attempts to communicate with the man were unsuccessful, as he continued shouting and showed signs of being in mental distress or possibly under the influence of an unknown substance. Due to the escalating situation, officers requested assistance from the Hostage Negotiation Team and SWAT.
SWAT officers eventually approached using an armored vehicle and safely took the suspect into custody without further incident. A subsequent search of the vehicle, conducted under a warrant, revealed the weapon to be a realistic-looking black BB gun.
The suspect was transported to King County Jail and booked for investigation of felony harassment, possession of a stolen vehicle, and an outstanding felony warrant.
Authorities urge anyone with additional information to contact the Seattle Police Department’s Violent Crimes Tip Line at (206) 233-5000.
