According to Canada’s public broadcaster CBC News, Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has won the country’s general elections. However, it is not yet clear whether the party will get 172 seats required for a majority or will have to seek support from another party.
In his victory speech, Mark Carney told his supporters, “President Trump is trying to break us up so that America can dominate us – that will never happen.” He said, “Our old relationship with America is now over. We have overcome the shock of American betrayal, we have to take care of each other.”
Just three months ago, the Liberal Party was far behind in the elections, but Carney took over the reins of the party amid growing tensions with the US. After this, the party’s campaign took a new turn. Earlier this year, Mark Carney was elected leader of the Liberal Party and became Prime Minister after Justin Trudeau, who was the Prime Minister of Canada for nine years, resigned.
During Justin Trudeau’s tenure, there was a lot of tension in relations between India and Canada and both the countries had significantly reduced their diplomatic relations. Donald Trump’s policies also played a role in the Liberal Party’s victory. According to them, Trump repeatedly provoked Canada and asked it to become the 51st state of America, which united the Canadian voters.
