Seattle, WA — The National Weather Service (NWS) in Seattle is warning residents across the Pacific Northwest to prepare for a series of very wet storm systems expected to arrive this weekend and continue into next week, bringing an increased risk of widespread river flooding.
According to forecasters, persistent heavy rainfall could push rivers to or above flood stage in multiple areas, especially in flood-prone valleys and low-lying communities. Officials are urging residents to begin preparations now and stay informed on the latest river and weather forecasts.
“Start preparing now, and stay up to date on the latest river conditions,” NWS Seattle advised in a public alert.
The agency emphasized that flooding can occur at any time of year, but risks rise significantly during periods of sustained rainfall. Residents are encouraged to:
-
Know whether they live in a floodplain
-
Monitor river levels closely
-
Plan alternate travel routes in case roads become flooded
-
Have emergency supplies ready
Live river forecasts and updates are available through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s official water monitoring website.
Emergency officials are reminding the public to never drive through flooded roadways, as water depth and road conditions can be difficult to judge and potentially deadly.
More advisories and updates are expected as the storm systems approach.
