Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday chaired a meeting of the committee for the appointment of the CBI director, which was also attended by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna.
This meeting has taken place before the two-year term of the current CBI Director Praveen Sood ends on May 25. The CBI Director is appointed by the Central Government on the recommendation of a three-member Appointment Committee, It is chaired by the Prime Minister and includes the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Chief Justice of India.
Let us tell you that the appointment of the CBI Director is done by the Cabinet Appointment Committee (ACC). This high-level committee consists of the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of India and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. This committee approves one name for the post of CBI director. This committee sits together and discusses the name for the appointment of CBI director and then recommends the name to the government.
