Rainier Avenue Upgrade Nears Completion in Renton

USARainier Avenue Upgrade Nears Completion in Renton

Renton, WA — The City of Renton has announced that Phase 4 of the Rainier Avenue South improvement project has reached substantial completion, marking a major milestone in the modernization of one of the city’s busiest corridors.

City officials said that while most of the heavy construction work is now finished, crews will remain on-site to complete final touches. These include landscaping, pavement repairs, and updated road markings to improve safety and traffic flow.

Upcoming Lane Closures

Drivers should prepare for temporary disruptions beginning Friday, March 27 at 7 a.m., when the intersection of Rainier Avenue South, Airport Way, and Renton Avenue Extension will be reduced to one lane in all directions. The closure is necessary to complete pavement repairs in the center of the intersection and is weather-dependent.

Long-Term Benefits

The project upgrades a corridor that is more than a century old, aiming to:

  • Improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Reduce traffic congestion over time
  • Enhance overall roadway durability

City officials emphasized that while construction may have caused inconvenience, the improvements are designed to provide lasting benefits and reduce the need for major future overhauls.

Community Impact

The City expressed appreciation for residents, businesses, and visitors for their patience throughout construction, calling the project a “huge accomplishment” for the community.

Once fully completed, the upgraded corridor is expected to support smoother traffic flow and safer travel for years to come.
