RENTON, Wash. – October 28, 2025 — Due to strong community interest, the City of Renton Emergency Management has announced additional seats for its upcoming Amateur Radio Technician Licensing Class, hosted by the Renton Emergency Communication Service (RECS).
The two-day course will be held on Saturday, November 1, and Saturday, November 8, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Renton Technical College, located at 3000 NE 4th Street.
The popular class teaches participants the fundamentals of amateur (ham) radio operation and prepares them to earn their official FCC Amateur Radio Technician License. The program is designed for beginners and local residents interested in learning how to support emergency communications during disasters or power outages.
Registration is open now at rentonwa.gov/hamradio and will close on Wednesday at noon.
City officials encourage anyone interested in community safety, emergency preparedness, or radio communication to take advantage of this opportunity. “Ham radio remains an important tool for emergency communication when traditional systems fail,” said the Renton Emergency Management team.
