Renton Police Clarify Role Amid Federal Immigration Enforcement Activity

USARenton Police Clarify Role Amid Federal Immigration Enforcement Activity

The Renton Police Department has issued a community update addressing concerns over the presence of federal immigration enforcement agents operating within the city.

According to the department, federal agents have the legal authority to conduct immigration enforcement anywhere in the country, including Renton. These operations are not coordinated with the Renton Police Department, and local officers are typically not notified before or after such actions take place. In many cases, police learn about these operations only through community reports or when responding to unrelated incidents.

Police officials emphasized that the department does not have authority over federal immigration operations. However, if residents believe they are victims of a crime or feel unsafe, they are encouraged to report it. Renton officers will respond to ensure immediate safety and document the situation.

Chief Schuddt reaffirmed that public safety remains the department’s top priority. While the department may not be able to influence federal actions, officers will focus on reducing tension and de-escalating situations whenever possible to protect the community.
