As students across Renton head back to school, the Renton Police Department is reminding drivers to stay alert and follow school bus safety laws to help protect children as they cross the street.
When a school bus activates its flashing lights and extends its stop arm, traffic rules vary depending on the type of roadway:
-
Two-lane roads: All traffic must stop.
-
Divided roads (with a barrier): Only traffic traveling behind the bus must stop.
-
Four-lane roads (without a divider): Traffic in both directions must stop.
Officers urge drivers to remain cautious and patient, emphasizing that children may cross unexpectedly.
“Stay alert for kids crossing—let’s keep them safe this school year,” the department stated in its safety announcement.
