USARenton Proclaims Sikh Heritage Month, Celebrates Vaisakhi Day

Renton — The City of Renton has officially recognized April 2026 as Sikh Heritage Month, honoring the culture, history, and contributions of the Sikh community. The proclamation was made during a recent City Council meeting led by Mayor Armondo Pavone.

The proclamation was accepted by Rupy Kaur, a member of the Mayor’s Inclusion Task Force, who highlighted the significance of Vaisakhi as a time of renewal, unity, and selfless service. She noted that recognition at the city level fosters pride and a sense of belonging within the Sikh community.

Vaisakhi, also referred to as Khalsa Day, is one of the most important celebrations in Sikhism. It marks both a spiritual and cultural milestone and is observed by Sikh communities worldwide.

To celebrate, members of the local Sikh community will gather on April 11 at the Khalsa Gurmat Center, joining others across the Puget Sound region in festivities that showcase Sikh heritage and traditions.

Renton, recognized as one of the most diverse cities in the United States, continues to embrace its multicultural identity. With over 2,100 residents born in India, the city’s South Asian population — including a vibrant Sikh community — plays a key role in its cultural fabric.
