The City of Renton and contractor Otak, Inc. have been recognized with a Gold Award for engineering excellence for their Monroe Avenue Stormwater Facility. The accolade presented by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Washington celebrates the project’s innovative design and application of advanced stormwater management techniques.

Located on Monroe Avenue across from the Jimi Hendrix Memorial, the stormwater facility is now the largest stormwater infiltration system in Western Washington. It treats runoff from roughly 260 acres in the Renton Highlands, removing debris and pollutants before allowing the cleaned water to soak back into the ground and help recharge the Cedar River.
Completed in January 2025, the project was finished ahead of schedule and under budget. The City’s Public Works Department partnered with Otak and secured grant funding to cover the bulk of the construction costs.
Officials say the facility not only enhances water quality but also represents a model for sustainable urban stormwater solutions as the region continues to grow.
