The National Weather Service Seattle/Tacoma has confirmed that a River Flood Warning remains in effect until further notice for the Green River near Auburn, with minor flooding forecast due to rising river levels.
Officials reported that at 9,000 cubic feet per second (cfs), the Green River is expected to flood low-lying areas of the middle Green River Valley, including water overtopping SE Green Valley Road. Backwater flooding is also possible in the lower Mill Creek basin between Auburn and Kent. A flow of 9,000 cfs corresponds to a Phase 3 flood in King County’s flood system.
As of 6:45 a.m. PST Tuesday, the river flow measured 8,920 cfs. Although water levels briefly dropped below flood stage, forecasts indicate the river will rise again this afternoon, reaching approximately 9,400 cfs by late Wednesday evening, with elevated levels expected to continue for several days due to ongoing rainfall.
Additional river flood warnings remain in place for the Cedar River at Renton, Cedar River near Landsburg, and the Green River near Auburn, all impacting King County.
Authorities urge residents and motorists to avoid flooded areas, obey barricades, and follow the safety message: “Turn around, don’t drown.” Even shallow, fast-moving water can be dangerous and life-threatening.
