SEATTLE — Seattle City Councilmembers offered congratulations to Mayor-elect Katie Wilson on Wednesday and extended their gratitude to outgoing Mayor Bruce Harrell, following Wilson’s projected victory and Harrell’s concession speech. The comments signal the beginning of a major transition at City Hall as leaders prepare for new priorities and a shifting political landscape.

Councilmembers applaud Wilson’s win

Councilmember Rob Saka (District 1) praised voters for “calling for change and a renewed focus on affordability, community, and fighting back against a resurgent Trump agenda.” Saka thanked Harrell for his “vision, compassion, and resolve,” while expressing enthusiasm for working with Wilson. “As a fellow parent of young children, I value the shared perspective and energy she brings,” he said, emphasizing goals such as universal preschool expansion, ending food deserts, and strengthening neighborhood safety.

Councilmember Maritza Rivera (District 4) said she had already spoken with Wilson to offer support. “We had a nice conversation, and I look forward to getting to know her better and working with her on advancing District 4 priorities,” Rivera said. She also thanked Harrell for his partnership on district needs and pledged to support a smooth transition.

Councilmember Dan Strauss (District 6) described the election as “close” but clear in its message. “It is time for decisive action to make our city safer and more affordable for working families,” he said. Strauss highlighted shared priorities with Wilson and extended “complete support during this transition.” He commended Harrell for accomplishments including the creation of the CARE team and record affordable housing investments, saying Harrell leaves a legacy that will “serve our city for decades.”

Councilmember Bob Kettle (District 7) congratulated Wilson on “the great campaign she waged” and said Seattle now faces the challenge of demonstrating that “a major West Coast blue city can operate efficiently and effectively while upholding our core Seattle values.” Kettle stressed the need for broad collaboration across government and communities, citing priorities such as addressing drug overdoses, expanding shelter capacity, fixing structural budget issues, and tackling the rising cost of living and doing business in the city. He also thanked Harrell for two years of “dedicated collaboration” and said Seattle is “measurably better off because of his leadership.”

Harrell’s legacy and Wilson’s transition

Mayor Bruce Harrell, who previously served as councilmember, council president, and mayor, is widely credited with leading the city through the later stages of the pandemic, launching major public safety reforms, and increasing investments in shelter and affordable housing.

Mayor-elect Katie Wilson, a longtime advocate for housing affordability, transportation equity, and economic justice, is set to take office amid national political headwinds and heightened local concern over affordability, safety, and homelessness.

City leaders emphasized unity and partnership as Wilson prepares to assume office, signaling a shared commitment to stability and forward momentum during the transition.
