Seattle Police Warn Residents About Roofing and Construction Scams After $74,000 Theft

USASeattle Police Warn Residents About Roofing and Construction Scams After $74,000 Theft

Seattle, WA —
Seattle police detectives are warning community members to be on alert for fraudulent roofing and construction scams after a Seattle resident was swindled out of $74,000 by two suspects posing as contractors.

On October 27, a 53-year-old developmentally delayed man living in the Ravenna neighborhood was approached by a man who identified himself as “Frank.” The suspect offered to provide an estimate for a new roof, then convinced the victim to write checks totaling $74,000 for supposed roof repairs.

“Frank” and an accomplice known as “Mark,” both described as having New York-style accents, claimed to represent Lakeside Roofing and Masonry. After receiving payment, the men dug a trench alongside the victim’s home, claiming it was due to a cracked foundation, and began dismantling parts of the roof, citing a “dangerous” chimney issue.

The suspects have not been caught and are believed to still be operating in the Seattle area. Detectives urge residents to exercise caution when approached by anyone soliciting home repair work.

Police Offer the Following Safety Tips to Avoid Scams:

  • Get at least three estimates from different companies.

  • Do not pay more than one-third upfront and avoid additional payments until the job is complete.

  • Always request a written contract before any work begins.

  • Check the Better Business Bureau and Washington State Department of Revenue for business verification.

  • Ask for photos of past projects and check online reviews.

  • Call 911 if someone attempts to go onto your roof without permission.

  • Advise elderly or vulnerable residents to consult family before signing or paying for any work.

  • Never feel pressured into immediate financial decisions.

  • If someone demands money under threat of property damage, call 911 immediately.

Seattle detectives from the General Investigations Unit are actively investigating the case. Anyone who may have encountered these individuals or fallen victim to similar scams is urged to contact 911 or the Seattle Police Non-Emergency Line at (206) 625-5011.
