AUTHOR:- Sage wolf – This Sunday, Slice of Summer welcomes the band Big Plans to Wait Park in Canby, Oregon. The group brings an energetic blend of blues, rock, and rhythm and blues, setting the perfect tone as audience members relax on the grass. Food trucks line the edge of the park, while kids dart between picnic blankets, cups of shaved ice in hand. It’s the quintessential small-town summer evening.
Slice of Summer is a free outdoor concert series held in Wait Park, made possible by donations from local businesses and the hard work of dedicated volunteers.
This week’s featured band, Big Plans, has been performing throughout the Portland metro area since 2008. The members originally met through their careers as urban planners—hence the name. “Big Plans,” jokes lead singer Joe Dills.
Over the years, the lineup has evolved four times. Today, the band is a five-piece ensemble featuring guitar, drums, keyboard, bass, and harmonica. This current formation came together about a year and a half ago. Dills discovered that colleague Mike Zylus played keyboard and invited him to join the group.
While this will be Big Plans’ first performance in Canby, they are not strangers to the stage. “We do about half our gigs in various city parks,” says Dills, “and the other half in neighborhood bars around Portland.”
“We love what we’re doing,” he adds. “And the band just keeps sounding better and better.”
