Classes are delayed in the Evergreen Public Schools district in Vancouver, Washington, as teachers went on strike Friday morning following a failure to reach agreement on a new contract with district leaders.
Teachers in the district, the third-largest in the state with roughly 21,000 students, say unresolved issues include class sizes, special education caseloads, and teacher pay. The Evergreen Education Association, the union representing teachers, voted to strike earlier this week.
“Our educators are committed to standing up for the schools our students deserve,” said EEA President Kristie Peak.
The district said it will not open schools while the strike continues and advised families to monitor official communications for updates.
The previous contract expired on Aug. 31. District officials say negotiations are ongoing and they hope to resume classes as soon as an agreement is reached.
